Hein Wetland Restoration

The Hein Wetland Restoration project will restore approximately 150 acres in Freeman Township to native wetlands and upland prairie. Acquired by the Shell Rock River Watershed District in 2024, the site will be transformed to improve water storage, enhance wildlife habitat, and restore natural hydrology to the site.

Final plans were prepared for public bidding in late 2025, with construction set for summer of 2026 following a successful bid award to Groundworks Backhoe Service. Once completed, the Hein Wetland Restoration will provide long-term flood storage, improved habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife, and expanded native prairie across the property, strengthening the ecological health and resiliency in the Shell Rock River watershed. Following restoration, this property will be donated to the USFWS for public use and enjoyment.
